Microphone windscreens (or wind blockers), often referred to as “deadcats” for their fuzzy appearance, can be effective at blocking unwanted wind noise but can also come at a higher price than you’d like to pay. However, as DIYer Chad Bredahl figured out, a cheap seatbelt cover is basically the same thing.
To be fair, deadcats are not that expensive. You can generally pick up a decent one for $ 25. A seatbelt pad, like this one, is only $ 6.20. According to Chad it works very well, so you might as well save yourself some cash when blocking the wind out of your audio recording.
